This week’s challenge is from the incredibly inventive Fiona Riplee:

Flash Fiction 500 words or less. Write a cute meet. Character 1 profession: photographer. Character 2 profession: insurance agent.

Here’s mine:

“What do you think you’re doing?”

Andrea was startled by the tone. She’d been bending down next to the three-year-old dark green Honda, examining the front bumper.  She looked up to see flashing hazel eyes and a too handsome, angular face. Reflexively, she looked to his left hand. No ring.

“I’m…uh…checking out your car.” She straightened her spine and stood.

He raised his eyebrows, questioning and flirting simultaneously. She wondered what he was thinking. She wanted to add checking you out, now, but she held her tongue.

“May I ask why?”

“Because I’m your insurance agent and you called to report an accident.”

“You’re my agent?”

She tensed, defensive. “Do you have a problem with that?”

He smiled, showing even white teeth and the world lit up around her.  He chuckled, deep in his throat. “No. In fact, I thought you were one of my models.”

Now it was her turn to raise her eyebrows.

“I’m a photographer.”

“And a careless driver?”

“Hey, this wasn’t my fault. The old man slammed on his brakes for no reason.”

“And you didn’t notice because…?”

“Would you believe I was daydreaming about you?”

“No.”

“In fact, if I’d known you were coming over to assess the damage, I would have had an accident sooner.”

“Do those lines ever really work?”

He chuckled again. “All the time.”

“Still, you might think about raising your standards.”

“Could I start with you?”

“Wow. Back off, Romeo. I’m here on business.”

“Sorry. You’re just so pretty.”

Andrea was trying for professionalism, but he wasn’t helping. “So, I suppose you took pictures at the scene and can save me some time?”

He flushed. “Ummm, no, it didn’t occur to me.”

“Of course not. Why would it? You only do this…for a living?”

“Actually, it’s a hobby. Would you believe I’m a reclusive billionaire in real life?”

“With a discount insurance company?”

“So, I’m frugal.”

“Too bad, since your rates are going up.”

He nodded solemnly. “Figures.”

Andrea pulled out her phone and snapped a few pictures.

“You could ease the pain, you know.” He was smiling and she melted, but just a little.

“How could I do that, although I think I’m afraid to ask.”

“Have lunch with me?”  He sounded like a hopeful puppy begging for a treat. “You have to eat, don’t you?”

She hesitated, then looked into those eyes and was lost. “I only have an hour,” she said.

“You know, the world can change direction in an hour.”

Andrea was sure he was right.
