The incredibly talented and prolific Collette Cameron would like to know – What quirky habits (superstitions, must haves, etc.) do you have while writing?

There are only two things I need. The first is (and I know I’ve said this before)…my dog at my feet. I am sure it’s because she reminds me that I have unconditional love, no matter how the work is going. Writing is a solitary profession and many times I wonder how I’m doing. So, I look over at her and she wags her tail. Just happy to be near me. That tends to infuse my positive self-image.

The other thing I need is a lack of interruptions. I am not sure why my husband thinks it’s not distracting to have him stand at the office door and stare at me. Or why my stepson thinks that the TV needs to be sooooo loud. What that translates to is I do my best work when the house is empty except for me and the pup.

Superstitions…you bet. But they change. Sometimes I think if I wear the right gemstones, like jade or amethyst, it will draw the good vibrations from the publishers. Sometimes I just think it’s about karma. Speaking of…does anyone else have bad line karma? When I get into a line, anywhere—the movies, the grocery store—the person in front of me takes ten times longer than they should. Always. Just a pet peeve.

The more time I spend writing, the less time I seem to have to complain. Which means that the more writing I do, the happier everyone is around me, including me.

Let’s see what habits, etc. the lady who asked the question has…

  1. I need total silence. Any music, no matter how soft, will sway my mood right out of the scene.
I like a dog at my feet too!

  2. It’s funny how non-writers never seem to understand how the slightest interruption can throw you off your game. We need our quiet writing time. =)

OMG! I have the worst line karma. It’s a talent to get behind the slowest person at the grocery store. Just happened today. The lady could tell I was impatient (can you say subtle) and she kindly offered to let me go first. I told her no, I’d never learn patience if I jumped ahead of her and to wait would build character for me. Truthfully, I was just embarrassed for being such a dope.

    1. You are so funny. It does get frustrating, though. Besides, patience is for people who haven’t experienced immediate gratification.

  4. Interruptions make me bananas! I have no “working” memory at all. None. Little noise and my head empties.

  5. I always have to have my dog with me as well 😀 She really is my fluffy muse!
