Tell your friends and feel free to ask us questions in the comment box.

The talented Eden Ashe wants us to talk character….

1. How much free rein do you give your characters during a story?

A character that breathes has to have a mind of his or her own. It would wrong of me to try to stifle their natural actions and thoughts. If I did that, they would only become an extension of me. Since I must see them as viable people, I have no choice but to let them dictate their story.

2. Have your characters ever done something so out of the blue that not only changed your story, but changed the tone and maybe even the genre you were originally going for? (Like your contemporary romance turned into a spicy paranormal)

Actually, my wip started as a paranormal and turned into a spicy medieval with paranormal overtones. Yes, the characters did that….

3. Do you have one character in your head that is sort of boss over all the rest? Or do you decide who to work on and when?

I tend to follow the story and try to go where it leads. Many times that means changing pov. Unless it is told in the first person, like “Jenna’s War”. Then, I have to allow her to see things her way.

I would love to see what the wonderful Carolyn Spear has to say about these questions. Let’s hop on over….

  1. It must be so freeing to be able to trust your characters to go where they want to go. I envy your talent for that. (wish I were of a control freak)

  2. That you see your characters as viable people is such a fantastic statement. I agree to let characters grow on their own.

  3. It sounds like you really trust your characters, and it’s interesting that see them as entities separate from you. Perhaps it’s the control freak in me who holds on to the reins too tightly. 🙂 Great post!

  4. Trust is good – in writing and in life!

You’re so right about letting the characters have their own voice, not an extension of the writer.

  7. Great answers, but this ‘A character that breathes has to have a mind of his or her own. ‘ was such a great way to describe it!
