Over the years of writing stories, I, like many writers, hear about the hero’s or heroine’s journey. As a part of the journey the main character runs into a Threshold Guardian that puts roadblocks or obstacles in their path to prevent forward movement. What Threshold Guardians have you, as an author, experienced in your hero’s/heroine’s journey to being an author?
One day, many years ago, I was about to clean my house. I thought – I can change those sheets or I can write a book. I have no idea where that came from, but it altered my life.
Yes, I sat down and wrote a novel in a weekend. It was terrible, just as many first attempts sometimes are. But it gave me the passion for writing.
Unfortunately, as we all know on some level, life can interfere with chasing our dreams. Me? I had to work. Full time. Year after year. Sometimes sixty hours a week. There’s not much left in the creative bank when you’re exhausted. But, here and there, I would squeeze in some time and I did have some measure of success. Not enough to live on, though. Just enough to keep the flame alive. But that Threshold Guardian ‘making a living’ just kept interfering.
Several years ago, I had the opportunity to quit working full time and my husband asked me what I wanted to do. Get out of the way, Guardian.
