This week the fabulous J.J. Devine has challenged us to do a flash fiction using these words: happiness, egg and purple. So, here goes.

The old woman’s face was purple. It took a minute for Jillian to register it and then she jumped up. She ran across the crowded restaurant, not even noticing she barely missed knocking over two waiters and a tray stand laden with plates. She paid no attention to the howl of protest as she stepped on another woman’s foot. She reached the old lady, grabbed her and pulled her up. Then, she wrapped her arms around the fragile ribs and pushed in and up. Once, twice. God, don’t let me break her ribs. Suddenly, a bit of egg flew across the room and Jillian felt the woman relax. She eased the old lady back down into her seat and was thrilled to see the pale cheeks suffuse with healthy color.

“Are you all right?” Jillian asked.

The woman nodded. “You saved my life. How can I ever thank you?” She was still a little breathless.

Jillian just smiled. “You know, that maneuver really works. I’m just so glad you’re okay.”

“How did you know I was choking?”

“I just looked up and saw your expression. That and you were turning blue.”

“My name is Maria. Maria Winters.”

“Nice to meet you. I’m Jillian.”

“You certainly are a pretty little thing. Are you married?”

“No.” Jillian laughed. What an odd question at a time like this.

“Well, I only ask because my grandson is meeting me here in a few minutes and I’d love to introduce you. He’s single and it’s time…if you know what I mean.”

Before Jillian could respond, a man who was obviously headed toward their table caught her attention. Seriously? The man was an Adonis. Thick black hair, blue eyes whose color would put the sky to shame. He was tall, muscular and his stride oozed confidence. Jillian was sure she was about to choke.

He leaned over to place a gentle kiss on his grandmother’s cheek, then straightened and held out his hand. “Hello.”

Jillian responded by letting him enfold hers in his warm, firm grasp. “Hello.”

Then, he nodded knowingly to his grandmother. “What did you do this time?”

“Nothing, honestly. I was choking and Jillian saved my life.”

“Are you telling me the truth?”

“Would I lie, Jeffrey?”

“Yes.” Then, he turned to Jillian. “My grandmother wants to make sure I meet every beautiful woman in town so I can get married. She has tried falling, crying and now, I suppose, choking.”

Jillian looked at the older woman, aghast.  She didn’t meet Jillian’s eyes, but spoke directly to Jeffrey.

“No, this time it was real. Jillian saved me.”

“Well, as long as you’re all right. I must say, Grandma, this time you picked the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.”

Jillian blushed at the compliment.

“Can I take you to dinner?” Jeffrey asked her.

Can you say happiness?
