The very talented Brenda Margriet has challenged us this week:

How do you choose the setting for your book? Does where you live inspire you?

“Texas Summer” – I spent eight years in New Mexico, so conjuring images of the mesa and the dry, hot air came easily to me. The dust, which can never be defeated, and the shimmering heat of summer were the perfect backgrounds for the story.

“Defiant Bride” – this one is set in the King’s Forest in 1509 England. I love the pre-Elizabethan era and the thought of hiding out in the lush preserved lands is exciting to me. There’s something magical about that place that inspired me.

“Captain’s Captive” opens on the waterfront and continues through a sea voyage to the colonies. How exciting. How brave. I would love to have been able to make that trip in real life.

“Jenna’s War” is set in the Civil War battlefields. What a fascinating time. The research brought it to life for me.

My WIP is set in a paranormal world of dreams. Yes, I dream every night and that was the inspiration.

So my settings come from both real life experience and my imagination…which sometimes feels more real than life.

Let’s hop over and see where the gifted Victoria Barbour gets her settings.

  1. One of the best things about being a writer is the chance to use your imagination. Your story in the world of dreams sounds interesting.
