This week the challenge comes from the fabulous Sarah Hegger…

Great Beginnings – A great opening line draws the reader in, makes them want to know more and compels them to read further. Share a great opening line, can be a classic or a more recent novel, tell us why you like it and then share the opening line to your newest WIP.

The Classic:

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way. . . .

 The perfect dichotomy…I love it!

And mine:

Rowland of Ashford leaned casually against the rough stone wall at the edge of the marketplace as if he hadn’t a care in the world.

Let’s see what opening drew in the talented Betty Bolte …

  1. I’ve always loved those lines, even if I’m not a Dickens’ fan. Those words, though, always moved me. As for Rowland, clearly he had a care… now I’ll have to find out.
And so to Betty (don’t worry, I know that’s from Pepys, not Dickens.. but such a fun segue).

  2. Anytime a story opens with someone acting like everything is just dandy, I know it isn’t lol. Awesome line!

  3. I like the casualness of your opening line, really gets you thinking what’s going to happen to shatter it 😀

Something tells me he should have a care in the world 🙂 Great opening!!!
